Oh no!! “IT IS WHAT IT IS!” Let’s just give up already!

Are you communicating with confidence? Maybe not!
Especially if you are habitually injecting this phrase in your conversations: “It is what it is.”

Ah yes, the philosophical equivalent of shrugging while Rome burns.
One of the most spiritually bankrupt phrases we’ve ever cooked up as a species.
A tidy little verbal sedative, perfect for numbing the soul while dodging responsibility.
It wraps apathy in a warm, fuzzy blanket and whispers, “Shh, don’t try.”
Funny thing though, give it a little time, add a splash of hindsight, and suddenly… surprise! It wasn’t what it was.
It was something we were too lazy, scared, or comfortable to question.
But hey, it sounded so right!

The hypocrisy is delicious. The same people who chant “It is what it is” can demand “outside-the-box thinking” when they want something.
Suddenly, boxes are bad. Boxes must be broken. But when it’s your suffering? Back in the box you go, buddy.
Say “It Is What It Is” like a sticker for good measure.

Personally? I don’t touch that phrase. It’s a mental booby trap disguised as wisdom.
A slow surrender.
Even in the worst, bloodiest dumpster fire of a situation, I still want the dignity of choosing my reaction. At the very, very least!

Here’s my simple takeaway: If I want to speak with more confidence, connect more deeply, and stop reducing life to a lazy shrug, I don’t use “It is what it is.”
If you love that phrase, I probably won’t change your mind. Go ahead, chant it like a sacred mantra. Drape it over your problems like a cozy excuse-blanket.
But … Share your thoughts.
This isn’t about hating a phrase for sport. It’s about shining a light on the weak language we lean on.
