Work-Life Balance: That Sad Illusion

Work-life balance is a cliché, and a sad illusion. Most people at work will never truly have it. But once you know that, you can actually do better for yourself. That’s the glimmer of hope.

Proportion is what matters, not balance. Think about coffee. A good cup isn’t about an equal split of water and espresso. It’s about getting the mix right for a strong taste. Same with your time.
Here’s where you can start getting the mix right. On weekends, when you’re off, stay off. Don’t peek at the work WhatsApp group. Don’t open the laptop unless someone’s dying. Don’t let work sneak into your free days. Protect your whole weekend like it’s your last cup of decent coffee. Protect holidays too, get guard dogs if you must.

Work will always try to spill over. Your job won’t care if your weekend turns into unpaid overtime. So here’s how to add more satisfying moments to your life:

Kill work notifications when you’re off. Not ‘mute.’ Kill. If they really need you, they’ll call. It’s probably not that serious.

Take little pockets of time back during work. Stare at the wall for ten minutes. Drink your coffee outside. Let your brain be free-range for once. People will say you’re slacking. So what? While they’re burning out, they’ll envy you.

Pick one day in the week and vanish for an hour. Log off, leave early, ignore your phone. Watch how fast they get nervous. That’s you tipping the mix your way. A bit more espresso, a lot less water. It’s an analogy. But work it.

That’s the start. Stronger mix, better taste. Keep brewing. Then… Savor that brew solo. No screen. No regrets. No apologies.
